According to the sheriff's office, the deputy responded to a 911 call during which dispatchers could hear screaming and some type of altercation.

A Washington state sheriff's deputy who was the first to respond to a 911 call about a home invasion was shot and killed late Sunday - and a suspect is still on the loose, authorities said. They did not immediately say how the white suspect died.

"He was one of the people in our agency who stepped up and stepped forward", said Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor, according to KOMO. He began to pursue a suspect on foot and shots were fired at the deputy, striking him.

The deputy was taken to Saint Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma where he died from his injuries. Deputy McCartney was a Navy veteran and served the department for three years.

Due to the manhunt and ongoing police investigation, the Bethel School District has canceled school on Monday. The Pierce County Sheriff's deputy was identified as 34-year-old Daniel McCartney.
