Transportation chief tells NAIAS new guidelines for autonomous vehicles are coming
Regulators will "carefully and responsibly" review General Motors' request to test an autonomous vehicle without a steering wheel, US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said Sunday.
Speaking during the Detroit Auto Show, she said the government is set to issue third set of voluntary guidelines for self-driving cars this summer, the Detroit News reported late on Sunday.
The Trump administration is taking a new approach to self-driving cars.
"The department will not be in the business of picking winners or losers or favoring one type of technology over another", stated Secretary Chao. She also said that revised guidelines cover not only autonomous cars, but also "barriers to the safe integration of autonomous technology for motor carriers, transit, trucks, infrastructure and other modes".
According to Chao, the agency has been preparing for the arrival of autonomous vehicles, finding ways to regulate them to keep everyone safe while not limiting innovation at the same time.
