South Africa: Hot Air Balloon Crash - One South African Dead, Two Injured in Egypt

Luxor governorate's prosecution is still investigating the accident, awaiting a comprehensive civil aviation report on the incident.

One person was killed and 12 other people were injured when a hot air balloon carrying about 20 people crashed near Egypt's ancient city of Luxor on Friday, a health ministry official said. A number of other tourists, including the four New Zealanders, were also taken to Luxor International Hospital but released after a few hours.

MENA did not say if charges had been brought against the four men, who include the pilot.

The city has seen a number of hot air balloon accidents, with one catching fire in 2013, killing 19 people.

Among the passengers were Melbourne couple Montanna Leveque, 20, and her 21-year-old boyfriend River Kano, Newcastle woman Zoe Drinkwater, 22, Illawarra woman Vanessa Condran, 24-year-old Emma Forrester and 54-year-old woman Morgan Adams. "I feel lucky to have walked out of this traumatic experience, a scary freak accident".

"The pilot was unconscious.so no one was actually steering and operating this balloon so it was just plunging".

The hot air balloons also offer views of the Valley of the Kings, where pharaonic nobility were buried.

Melbourne's Adele Jayde posted on Instagram that she was "extremely thankful and blessed that myself and my travel companions on this tour all managed to come out of it alive with only minor injuries, as others in the basket with us weren't so lucky".

"The balloon was getting ready to land at 6:30 am, when a sudden, strong wind erupted, causing a hard landing", Hany Al-Sayyed, the company's traffic manager, told CNN.

"The victim is an Australian man of South African descent".

Other balloons had taken off around the same time but landed safely, the officials added, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Balloon flights were resumed on Saturday. The deadliest took place in 2013 when a balloon flying over the city caught fire and plunged about 305 meters (1,000 feet) to the ground, crashing into a sugar cane field and killing at least 19 foreign tourists.
