Former Egyptian Prime Minister Shafiq Retreats From Running in 2018 Presidential Elections
In a surprise move, Shafiq announced on Sunday that he would not run, stating that he "would not be the best person to lead state affairs in the coming period". My stay at UAE distanced me from closely monitoring the developments and achievements that happened in Egypt.
Egypt's presidential election will take place on 26-28 March, the national election commission announced on Monday, with a run-off set for 24-26 April if needed. He returned to Egypt from the United Arab Emirates in December after announcing his intention to run, setting off a firestorm of criticism from state-aligned media and speculation that he was being held by authorities in a Cairo hotel.
Shafiq was Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister before he was toppled in the 25 January uprising in 2011.
"Hence, I've decided I am not intending to run in Egypt's presidential elections in 2018".
