In a 40-page report, the committee recommended that abortion should be available without restriction up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, and that the procedure should be allowed if the life or health of the woman was at risk. The union, she said, will continue speaking with members of the Oireachtas this week and next.

They are holding a special parliamentary party meeting ahead of the Dáil term resuming.

Fianna Fail Deputy Charlie Mc Conalogue did not respond, while his party colleague Deputy Pat The Cope Gallagher said he does not support repeal of the Eighth Amendment, and neither does he support unrestricted abortion up to 12 weeks.

Martin Heydon said the discussion reflected the fact that the party is a broad church.

Students will be making their presence felt outside the Dáil tomorrow, as politicians debate the recommendations of the Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment.

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said he ús deeply shocked by the current overcrowding crisis at the nations hospitals.

He also said questions were asked about the legislation that would give effect to the referendum.

Mr Varadkar says they are waiting for advice before they can move forward on the issue.

Mr Breen said he had concerns about the 12-week recommendation, but would listen closely to today's debate.

MEP Mairead McGuinness said many in her party had a nuanced view on this issue and their positions are not yet confirmed.

An independent facilitator, Lucy McCaffrey, attended the meeting.

The taoiseach also cautioned that the Eighth Amendment may have to be replaced before abortion laws could be changed.

"It was a very respectful, mature debate which I think we have to have as a society because this is a societal issue", Mr Buttimer said.

Heydon acknowledged that a number of Fine Gael party members spoke about being "conflicted" over the issue.

She believes there is an openess from others within the parliamentary party to learn.
