It's a new era for the LDS Church, which announced this morning that Russell M. Nelson, 93, has been set apart to be the president of the almost sixteen-million-member denomination. He was sustained as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on April 1, 1995.

Former LDS Church president Thomas S. Monson passed away January 2 at age 90 after more than six decades of service to the LDS Church.

The new leader of a global faith of more than 16 million members has named President Dallin H. Oaks, 85, and President Henry B. Eyring, 84, to serve with him as his first and second counselors in the First Presidency, the Church's highest governing body. Almost 10 of those years were as the LDS president. First counselor Marion G. Romney resumed service in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles when President Ezra Taft Benson became the new prophet.

Oaks said he pledges his support to President Nelson's "loving and inspired leadership".

So the announcement reflected both continuity and change: Eyring can offer continuity with past First Presidencies, while Oaks represents a bridge to the future. He was sustained and set apart in the Salt Lake Temple on Sunday, January 14, 2018.
