Former European Commissioner Peter Sutherland dies aged 71
Businessman Denis O'Brien, who is the owner of Independent News and Media, said he was very saddened to hear of the death of Mr Sutherland.
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said Sutherland was "a true European".
He also served as director-general of the World Trade Organisation and was a former chairman of Goldman Sachs International.
He was the oil major's longest-serving chairman, from 1997 to 2009, and held that role even longer at Goldman Sachs International, retiring in 2015 after 20 years in the job.
Mr Sutherland, who was credited with leading a successful drive for cheap air fares, had a glittering career, and political leaders spoke about the important contribution he made over many decades.
"I would like to extend my honest sympathies to Peter's wife, children and grandchildren".
After the commission, Mr Sutherland took chairmanships at AIB Bank and the European Institute of Public Administration.
Peter Sutherland has been remembered as a "true European" and a giant on the worldwide stage by some of the many figures in politics and business that he worked with.
Sutherland is survived by his wife Maruja, three children and several grandchildren.

Born in Dublin, Mr Sutherland studied law at UCD and Kings Inns and was a barrister by profession.
He was appointed as Attorney General in June 1981 at the age of just 35 becoming the youngest person to ever hold the position.
Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said Sutherland was "an Irishman, a committed European and a proud internationalist". He had a number of health issues in recent years.
As AG, Mr Sutherland said the wording of the amendment was flawed and would cause considerable difficulty for medical practitioners.
As a European commissioner in the 1980s, he helped to lay the groundwork for the European single market. He was the United Nations special represenative for worldwide migration in recent years.
Reacting to his passing, Former Fine Gael Taoiseach and personal friend John Bruton paid a warm tribute. "It built the foundation for the building of a rules-based worldwide order, in worldwide trade, which has contributed to a quarter century of global prosperity, because the rules protected the weak as well as the strong". Peter made an outstanding and distinguished contribution to public life in his capacity as an Attorney General, European Commissioner and first Director-General of the World Trade Organisation. "His wisdom, shrewdness and passion for justice were a powerful combination, and he was a fearless and courageous public witness, not least in his work as the UN Secretary General's special envoy on worldwide migration".
The Taoiseach noted his work as European Union competition commissioner from 1984 to 1989.
"He was a champion of free trade and fair competition and had a keen intellect and understood the changing nature of global trade and economy", Mr Martin said.
"He was a true patriot who had a great love for his country irrespective of his success on the world stage", Mr Martin said.
