France Gall dead: French singer and Eurovision winner passes away aged 70

French pop singer France Gall, who collected hits and sold millions of albums over a four-decade career, has died.

The French culture minister, Françoise Nyssen, described her as "a timeless icon of French song".

She was the original inspiration behind the 1968 hit "Comme d'Habitude" made famous in its English rendition as "My Way" by American crooner Frank Sinatra.

The daughter lyricist Robert Gal (who wrote for Edith Piaf and others), France released her first single "Ne sois pas si bête" on her sixteenth birthday.

"Gainbourg was also the writer for many of her early hits, including "Poupee De Cire, Pou" pee De Son" ("Wax Doll, Rag Doll"), which won the 1965 Eurovision song contest and brought her fame outside her home country.

France Gall appearing on French TV in 2012. A tribute to her was posted on the Eurovision website, and a tweet from the official Eurovision account expressed sorrow "on behalf of the entire Eurovision family".

In the 1970s, Gall collaborated with musicians like Italian disco producer Giorgio Moroder and vocalist Michael Berger, whom she later married. She retired from recording and performing in 1997, following the death from cystic fibrosis of their eldest child, Pauline.

But in 2015 she reappeared with the musical "Résiste".

Glam-rocker Francois wrote "Comme d'Habitude" about his split-up with Gall.
