George RR Martin- Will executive produce the series of his novella Nightflyers

Syfy channel has announced an official series order for the series "Nightflyers", based on a sci-fi-horror novella by George R.R. Martin, including new production and casting information for the 10-episode first season.

The NBCUniversal-owned cable network has picked up the drama based on the Game of Thrones creator's novella to pilot.

Jeff Buhler (Jacob's Ladder) wrote the adaptation for television and will executive produce alongside Daniel Cerone (The Blacklist) who will also serve as showrunner. "But when terrifying and violent events begin to take place they start to question each other - and surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought", reads the synopsis for Nightflyers from Syfy.

Curiously, Jaffe has already adapted Nightflyers into a feature film, back in 1987 - starring The Apple's Catherine Mary Stewart and directed by Robert Collector, of Linda Blair prison roughie Red Heat fame. Netflix is co-producing the drama and has picked up the global distribution rights, and they have considerably more resources than SyFy. Alison Rosenzweig and Michael Gaeta of Gaeta Rosenzweig Films will also executive produce, along with Lloyd Ivan Miller and Alice P. Neuhauser of Lloyd Ivan Miller Productions. Gretchen Mol, who is known for her work on "Boardwalk Empire", is set to portray Dr. Agatha Matheson.

Kirby confessed to Variety that she only researched her character up to 1964, which is the year Season 2 ends. She's going to make Princess Margaret a legend.

The cast also includs Eoin Macken ("The Night Shift"), David Ajala ("Fast & Furious 6"), Sam Strike ("EastEnders"), Maya Eshet ("Teen Wolf"), Angus Sampson ("Fargo"), Jodie Turner-Smith ("The Last Ship") and Brian F. O'Byrne ("Million Dollar Baby").

George R.R. Martin has a new project on the way but, unfortunately, it's not his long-awaited final book The Winds of Winter in his series, A Song of Ice and Fire.

Nightflyers will be shot in Ireland, and has a tentative premiere date of July, 2018.
