It seems like a good chance that Guillermo del Toro and "The Shape of Water" will continue to enjoy their award season success at the big show and, at the very least, we should now see del Toro nominated for Best Director if not also see "The Shape of Water" considered for Best Picture. With "The Shape of Water" being del Toro's ultimate tribute to the classic movie monster, it was incredible to see him get recognized for the history and passion that went into making this film.

He started by saying, "Lower the music. It's taken 25 years to get here, give me a minute".

"For 25 years, I have hand-crafted very odd little tales, made of motion, colour, light and shadow", he said in his acceptance speech. In three precise instances, these unusual stories, these fables, have saved my life. It just so happens, he says, that "The Shape of Water" is relevant for the current time period. "And these things are biography and they are alive".

The prolific actress most recently starred in HBO's Emmy-nominated The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and will next play Mrs. Winfrey next stars in Ana DuVernay's " Wrinkle in Time ", which hits theaters in April.

Del Toro accepted the award with a speech about the value of monster movies, saying "I have been saved and absolved by them".

The Shape of Water stars Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon, Sally Hawkins and Doug Jones.

In what was deemed one of the closest categories going into the night, Del Toro beat Martin McDonagh (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk), Ridley Scott (All the Money in the World) and Steven Spielberg (The Post) to the prize. Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro took home his first Golden Globe today for directing acclaimed fantasy romance The Shape of Water.
