HP Recalls Batteries for Notebook Computers and Mobile Workstations Due to Fire and Burn Hazards
A recall has been issued by HP involving a lithium-ion battery malfunction on notebook computers and workstations that were sold from December 2015 through December 2017. The same batteries were sold as replacements for the HP ZBook Studio G4 mobile workstation. These batteries are used inside various Envy, ProBook and ZBook notebooks over the past two years due to fire and burn hazards. However, please note that the "Battery Safety Mode" is only applicable to HP products affected by this recall.
"Many of these batteries are internal to the system, which means they are not customer replaceable".
Health Canada says that as of December 18, 2017, HP Canada had not received any reports of incidents or injuries in Canada but there have been eight reports of overheating batteries in the United States and one reported injury.
The battery packs were sold by Best Buy, and other stores and authorized dealers nationwide and online at www.Amazon.com, www.hp.com and other websites. They were shipped in notebook computers and mobile workstations and also purchased separately.

HP has initiated a voluntarily recall of a number of laptop batteries. After installing the update, any affected laptop will fully discharge its battery and only function when plugged into the wall until the mode is disabled after a battery replacement. Users will still be able to use the device if connected to an HP power adaptor.
"If the validation process identifies a battery as being eligible for replacement, the BIOS update should be applied and the system should be rebooted".
The recall comes almost a year after HP recalled over 100,000 laptop batteries due to overheating issues and fire risks, expanding an earlier recall from June 2016 when 41,000 units were recalled. If a user is unsure as to whether their device is affected, the company is providing a downloadable utility that will check to see if their device contains a recalled battery.
