"President Donald Trump denied he is a racist Sunday, three days after he reportedly referred to immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and Africa as coming from "s--hole" countries".

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said the comments were "beneath the dignity of the presidency" and Trump's desire for more immigrants from countries like Norway was "an effort to set this country back generations by promoting a homogenous, white society".

"Still, he added that it's necessary for lawmakers to negotiate to pass a budget".

"Did you see what various senators in the room said about my comments?" he said.

Trump has been accused of using the word "shithole" to describe African countries during an Oval Office meeting last Thursday with a bipartisan group of six senators.

He has faced widespread backlash for his comments, with some lawmakers referring to him as a racist.

Lindsey Graham of SC said Trump had drastically changed his tune on a compromise immigration bill just before the Thursday meeting.

Durbin has said the White House should release whatever recording it might have of the meeting.

The chief minister reportedly spoke to AG and directed him to take immediate steps for getting the stay vacated. In a tweet, Tharoor said the Home Minister had agreed that custodial deaths should always be inquired into.

Perdue described as a "gross misrepresentation" reports that Trump used the vulgarity.

Trump took particular issue with the idea that people who'd fled to the USA after disasters in places such as El Salvador, Guatemala and Haiti would be allowed to stay as part of the deal, according to the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to publicly describe the discussion.

Trump was said to have told them that instead of granting temporary residency to citizens of countries hit by natural disasters, war or epidemics, the United States should be taking in migrants from countries like Norway. The most important figure in the Civil Rights Movement - maybe the most important figure in African-American history - was being honoured across the country, and the President couldn't care less.

"Never said anything derogatory about Haiti", he later tweeted.

"Honestly, I don't think Democrats want to make a deal", he told reporters.

Trump's comments came as Durbin was presenting details of the compromise plan that included providing $1.6 billion for a first installment on the president's long-sought border wall. Trump announced previous year that he will end the Obama-era DACA program unless lawmakers come up with a solution by March.

Trump was having dinner with House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Republican of California, to discuss negotiations on upcoming legislation - in particular, what to do about Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, an Obama administration policy covering undocumented immigrants bought to the U.S.by their parents as minors. He also apparently said he wants to exclude Haiti from an immigration reform deal. "I think they talk about DACA, but they don't want to help the DACA people". "Why don't we get more people from Norway?'" Durbin told reporters in Chicago.

Several Democratic representatives have said they intend to skip the president's State of the Union address later this month over the comments, accusing the president of racism. I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians. We know, based on reports from staffers that they have to cushion things for Donald Trump.
