Intel Hit With Class Action Lawsuits Over 'Meltdown' Security Flaw

Intel says rapidly issuing updates to all processors impacted by Meltdown

Intel says rapidly issuing updates to all processors impacted by Meltdown

There is no known fix for it, and it is not clear what chip makers like Intel will do to address the problem.

Now that a bit more time has passed, we've since learned that the vulnerability in question not only impacts Intel processors, but AMD and ARM processors as well.

Intel had said the issues were not caused by a design flaw and asked users to download a patch and update their operating system.

Amid a frantic rush to patch a computer security flaw, experts struggled Thursday to determine the impact of a newly discovered vulnerability which could affect billions of devices worldwide.

The researchers at Google showed how a hacker could exploit the flaw to get passwords, encryption codes and more, even though there have been no reports of any attacks using the vulnerability.

There's no complete software patch for Spectre right now, said Michael Daly, chief technology officer of cybersecurity and special missions at Raytheon, a defense company. Intel has helped provide security patches, but the complaints raise concerns that these patches will hurt computer performance, and aren't an adequate response to the problem. "Intel is committed to responsible disclosure".

Saban, Smart meet with media ahead of Monday night clash
He coached with Saban at LSU, the Miami Dolphins and for nine years with Alabama, the last eight as defensive coordinator. Coach Smart says he has not lost sleep thinking about Alabama, because he can't control what the Tide does.

"What actually happens with these flaws is different and what you do about them is different", said Paul Kocher, a researcher who was an integral member of a team of researchers at big tech companies like Google and Rambus and in academia that discovered the flaws.

If you use a computer, smartphone, tablet, smart TV or any other computing device, you're nearly definitely affected, and there's no real way to detect if someone's trying to crack into your device, system or cloud account. "Check with your operating system vendor or system manufacturer and apply any available updates as soon as they are available", the company said. Apple did not release a statement, but researchers have found evidence of patches in macOS and iOS.

Either way, the plaintiffs also argue that Intel has known for months about the two bugs (after Google disclosed it to them earlier this year), but continued to advertise those "defective" CPUs with the same performance Intel originally claimed they have, before they knew about the vulnerabilities. The reason this flaw is much more complex than the usual software or hardware bugs is that it's more than just a bug that can be fixed with an update.

In a post on the company's website Wednesday, AMD said that one variant of the Spectre vulnerability was resolved by software and operating system updates. While programs are typically not permitted to read data from other programs, a malicious program can exploit Meltdown and Spectre to get hold of secrets stored in the memory of other running programs.

"This issue represents a higher risk in Cloud environments because it would be easy to create an AWS or Microsoft Azure account, start a new instance and then run the exploit to dump memory of the server which would be hosting many other instances of other customers", said K.K. Mookhey, CEO and Founder of Network Intelligence, a cyber security consulting firm.
