Submarine found to be China's new Shang-class sub
JAPAN said today that a Chinese naval submarine spotted in waters off flashpoint islands in the East China Sea was one of its new type of nuclear-powered attack vessels.
"Operating a submerged submarine close to another country's territory goes against the norms of worldwide rules", Minister of Defence Itsunori Onodera told reporters.
"We have serious concerns as the submarine's underwater passing through our country's contiguous waters is an act that unilaterally increases tension", he added, noting that Japan would stay vigilant.

A Defense Ministry source speculated that China may have deployed the sub to test the Maritime Self-Defense Force's patrolling capabilities. These vessels can be armed with long-range cruise missiles capable of reaching faraway targets on land.

The submarine was first detected on Thursday in waters contiguous to Japan's territory around the islands, known as the in Japan and in China, but was finally identified on Friday, the defence ministry said, a day after Japan lodged a protest with China over the presence of a frigate in the same area.
Stars and Stripes cites a statement from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's Cabinet directing the Japanese military to "prepare for all possible contingencies and to coordinate closely with the U.S".
Neither entered what Japan considers its territorial waters.
The Senkaku Islands are small and sparsely inhabited, but they are important because they are close to major shipping lanes, they make for excellent fishing grounds, and, most importantly, because sizable reserves of oil and gas are believed to be located nearby.
The sovereignty of the Senkaku Islands, claimed as Diaoyu by Beijing and Tiaoyutai by Taiwan, is a perennial thorn in relations between Asia's two largest economies, which otherwise have been showing signs of improving.
