Astronaut John Young dies at 87

Former astronaut John Young, a NASA trailblazer whose six journeys into space included a walk on the moon and commanding the first space shuttle flight, died Friday after complications from pneumonia, NASA said Saturday.

Young had an extensive career with the agency and was one of the early space pioneers.

Young finally walked on the moon himself in 1972 as commander of the Apollo 16 mission - the ninth of 12 people to have ever set foot on the lunar surface. He flew into space twice during NASA's Gemini program in the mid-1960s, twice on the Apollo lunar missions and twice on space shuttles in the 1980s. He ended up as the only person to fly on space shuttle, Apollo and Gemini missions.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Saturday said, "We're saddened by the loss of astronaut John Young".

Ten years later, he was selected to join NASA and in 1965 he made he made his first trip to space with Gus Grissom on Gemini 3. "Current Jonson Space Center Director Ellen Ochoa today said" It would be hard to overstate the impact that John Young had on human space flight. "He was in every way the 'astronaut's astronaut.' We will miss him".

Young was born in San Francisco California but grew up in Georgia, Florida. From there, he joined the US Navy, served aboard the USS LAWS during the Korean War, and went on to attend the Navy Test Pilot School.

Chaikin says Young's NASA career up to that point - culminating with a moon landing - had been impressive. Young then went on to stand on the moon, drive 16 miles in a lunar rover and spent three nights on the lunar surface.

Across a 42-year career at NASA, Young was a relentless advocate for flight safety, firing off countless memos that occasionally made him a thorn in the side of NASA management, especially in the wake of the 1986 Challenger disaster. He was part of the Apollo 10 crew that orbited the moon in May 1969 in preparation for the first landing later that year.

Astronauts and others shared their condolences on Twitter.

When asked what moment in his career was most memorable at his retirement from NASA in 2004, he replied, "I liked them all".
