The nature of the threats are unclear, but it is the second time in recent weeks Pai has dealt with imminent security concerns.
Pai was slated to speak next Tuesday (less than a week from now), however, the statement didn't give a reason as to why Pai will be absent, and a FCC spokesman declined to comment on the chairman's reasons for abruptly abandoning his public appearance at the show.
With less than a week before this year's Consumer Electronics Show, Chairman of the Federal Communications Comission Ajit Pai has made a decision to bail on a scheduled appearance.
Pai has been targeted by death threats on social media after his agency approved to strip Obama-era net neutrality rules.
That vote later took place on 15 December. In 2014 protesters camped outside the home of then-Chairman Tom Wheeler, a Democrat, and prevented him from leaving his driveway.
Three other FCC commissioners, as well as the acting chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, are still expected to attend.

Travis Kelce ruled out of Chiefs' game vs
A key part of the Chiefs offense, Kelce had 1,038 yards and eight touchdowns for Kansas City through the regular season. The Chiefs led by 21-3 at the half, so there's a good chance they won't miss Kelce too much in this game.
CBS renews 'Young Sheldon' for Season 2
If Season 12 is the end, the BBT universe could live on through spin-off Young Sheldon , which was renewed earlier on Saturday. The show, which focuses on Jim Parsons' character Sheldon Cooper, stars Ian Armitage with Parsons as narrator.
It looks like Ajit Pai can't handle the desert heat.
Net neutrality supporters have vowed to continue to fight for protections.
The FCC established net neutrality regulations to reclassify broadband as Title II "common carriers" under the Communications Act of 1934.
The fear is that consumers will have to pay for more expensive packages to stream Netflix, or tech companies will have to negotiate deals directly with providers.
But the U-turn on the rules faces legal challenges, including one led by New York's attorney general, Eric Schneiderman.
