Her film career spanned over seventy films and laid the foundation for Latina actors who would follow her, like Selma Hayek. Though she found success in the United States, she continued to act in Mexican productions throughout the 1950s.

Jurado started her career during Mexican cinema's golden age before transitioning to Hollywood for her first role.

Her cousin Emilio Portes Gil became president of Mexico in 1928. Jurado's limited grasp of English led to her delivering her lines by memorizing the way they sounded.

She was set on making it in the movie industry and proceeded to sign her first contract without their consent, in secret. Despite the language barrier, her performance was strong and managed to attract the attention of Hollywood. She was married to Oscar-winning actor Ernest Borgnine from 1959 until their divorce in 1964. Among the last of her more than 60 roles were in John Huston's "Under the Volcano" (1984), filmed in Cuernavaca, and Stephen Frears's "The Hi-Lo Country" (1998).

Her best-known Mexican performance was in the film Nosotros los Pobres ("We the Poor"), which was released in 1948.

Remembered as one of the favorite villains of the national screen, this actress was discovered by the American filmmaker Budd Boetticher, who would help her to make her debut in Hollywood with the film The Bullfighter and The Lady.
