Netanyahu Makes Careful Comments on US Aid Cuts to Palestine

While Netanyahu supports the aid cut, he believes the move should be gradual.

Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu has expressed support for a gradual cutback of U.S. funding to the United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA) for Palestinian refugees, according to Israeli reports.

An Israeli report over the weekend that said the USA failed to give UNRWA a payment of $125 million was disputed by a White House official.

Netanyahu complained that the U.N. Relief Works Agency (UNRWA) is focused exclusively on Palestinian refugees and that its funding should instead be shifted to the U.N.'s blanket refugee agency.

The agency plays a significant role in supporting Palestinian refugees with access to education, healthcare, social services and employment in the occupied Palestinian territories, and in neighbouring states.

"It also enshrines the narrative of the so-called "right of return".

Trump angered the Palestinians last week when he threatened in a pair of tweets to cut funding to the United Nations agency that handles Palestinian refugees if the Palestinian Authority doesn't talk peace with Israel.

UK Northern Ireland minister resigns
Previously, he was a Minister at the Home Office, consecutively taking on the Crime Prevention, Security and Immigration briefs. The failure of the talks is pushing Northern Ireland closer towards direct rule from London.

"Of course this creates a situation in which there are great-grandchildren of refugees, who are not refugees but who are cared for by UNRWA, and another 70 years will pass and those great-grandchildren will have great-grandchildren and therefore, this absurdity needs to stop", Netanyahu said.

UNRWA's response came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for cutting aid to UNRWA until it ceases to exist.

"UNRWA is mandated by the General Assembly to continue with its services until a just and lasting solution is found for the Palestine refugees".

"UNRWA is an organization that perpetuates the problem of the Palestinian refugees", he added.

The US is the largest donor to UNRWA, with a pledge of almost $370 million as of 2016, according to the organisation's website.

For example, Breitbart Jerusalem reported last week that the agency was unable to confirm whether its statistic of 500,000 was a true reflection of the number of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon when that country's own bureau of statistics cites 175,000 - almost two thirds less than UNRWA's number.
