BMW enters sub-compact SUV race with all-new X2
If hybrids, plug-in hybrids and EVs are going to become the mainstream, it wouldn't hurt if rival manufacturers stole a few design ideas from the updated BMW i8 coupe and the i8 Roadster that are on display this week at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
BMW is getting into the subcompact SUV market with the all-new 2019 X2 that was revealed Monday in Detroit.
The model X2 includes a sportier, coupe-like wardrobe and new, Pentagon-shaped Bimmer's signature kidney grille's Pentagon-shaped version.
BMW's new X2 crossover will fill a key gap in the automaker's utility lineup that accounts for a third of its worldwide sales.
As well as the standard BMW X2, customers can also choose from the BMW X2 M Sport and M Sport X models.

Interior of the model X2 comes with 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine with228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. That power gets to the wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. It wears optional 19- and 20-inch Y-spoke wheels and twin tailpipes that take the sporty look with a diameter of almost four inches.
Inside the X2 there is seating for five and a host of BMW's crash-avoidance and entertainment technologies.
The X2 is 81.2mm (3.2 inches) shorter and 71.2mm (2.8 inches) lower than the X1 but has the same wheelbase, with shorter overhangs and a roofline that looks like a coupe. Its top sped is 130mph and it can hit 60mph in 6.3 seconds.
Three engine/transmission variants are offered from launch: the BMW X2 sDrive20i gasoline engine with 192 hp; plus the X2 xDrive20d diesel variant with 190 hp and X2 xDrive25d diesel with 231 hp.
