Gutekunst traveled on Saturday to Houston to interview for the Texans open general manager position but the interview never happened on Sunday because he accepted the GM job in Green Bay instead, according to McClain.

But that's a moot point now that the Packers have their man in Gutekunst, who had been Green Bay's director of player personnel since 2016 and has been in the Packers' organization since 1998.

Gutekunst has spent 19 years working in the Packers' personnel department.

The Green Bay Packers are staying in house by replacing Ted Thompson as General Manager with 44 year old Brian Gutekunst. He returned to the Packers as a college scout on December 30, 1998, when he was hired by then-general manager and Hall of Famer Ron Wolf. His first full-time scouting job came the following year as an assistant with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Gutekunst attended the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, playing football for two seasons before suffering a career-ending shoulder injury.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said on Thursday that he's involved in the search process for the new General Manager and said that he needs to "fit together" with whoever takes over Thompson's responsibilities. McCarthy recently received a one-year contract extension and is signed through the 2019 season, and Murphy said Tuesday that the new GM would have the power to hire and fire the head coach. The request for the Green Bay native was denied. He could join former Senior Personnel Analyst Alonzo Highsmith who joined John Dorsey's scouting staff in Cleveland last week.
