Winfrey then addressed Recy Taylor who passed away just 10 days ago and never received justice for being sexually assaulted by six white men in 1944.
"For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men".
Poitier became the first black man to be presented with the annual honor in 1982.
Winfrey was announced as the recipient back in December.

Winfrey's charitable endeavors include establishing The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa to provide education for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Winfrey won the Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement at this year's Golden Globes.
