Egypt denies ‘tacit’ acceptance of US Jerusalem move
"Egypt's positions on global issues are not derived from alleged leaks from anonymous sources", said the chairman of the State Information Service, Diaa Rashwan, in a written statement issued shortly after the The Time's report published transcripts of the alleged recordings.
Egypt's stance on Jerusalem remains unchanged, the statement said, adding that the Times does not provide evidence that the official named in its report, Captain Ashraf el-Kholi, was an officer with the country's intelligence service.
The New York Times said on Saturday that it had recordings of four phone calls the officer, a Captain Ashraf al-Kholi, made to Egyptian actress Yousra and presenters Mofid Fawzy, Saeed Hassaseen and Azmi Megahed. However, he told the hosts not to toughly condemn the move and persuade the viewers to accept the decision because a strife with Israel is not "in Egypt's national interest".
"I am friends with Ashraf and we talk all the time", the Times reported Megahed as saying in the interview. At the time, Abbas's diplomatic adviser, Majdi Khaldi, said Abbas would not meet with Pence "because the US has crossed red lines" with its decision on Jerusalem.
In his rebuttal to The New York Times article, Mr Rashwan stressed that it was Egypt that drafted the UN Security Council resolution condemning U.S. president Donald Trump's decision on Jerusalem, a measure defeated only by the United States using its veto.
"How is Jerusalem different from Ramallah, really?" el-Kholi said.

Before Trump's announcement, Abbas was scheduled to meet with Pence in the biblical town of Bethlehem.
Israel captured eastern Jerusalem - which includes Judaism's holiest sites of the Temple Mount and the Western Wall in the Old City - and the West Bank in the 1967 defensive war, seizing it from Jordanian occupation and reuniting the city.
The status of Jerusalem has always been a central issue in the decadeslong Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
