His contract with the side expired in 2016 and he was replaced by former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene who led Mumbai to another title triumph last season. Initially, the 43-year-old had joined the franchise as a player in 2013 but pulled himself out in the mid-way through the tournament due to poor form.

Ponting now fills the void which as left vacant by former Indian skipper Rahul Dravid who stepped down after the previous season's owing to BCCI's conflict of interest regulations. He was also appointed as the assistant coach of Australia for the T20I series versus Sri Lanka a year ago.

Ricky Ponting himself has vast experience of playing and coaching in the IPL. We will have a new coach and a new team with the idea of having continuity.

Ponting, who announced his retirement from global cricket in 2012, guided Mumbai Indians to their second IPL title in 2015 during his two-year coaching stint with the franchise.
