Rain forces postponement of ASB Classic quarterfinals

After one unsuccessful finals berth, two semi-finals and a quarter-final, Julia Goerges has finally charted a path to ASB Classic glory.

"I can pass my time pretty nicely - I can relax, I can chill, and maybe if they get up in Germany I'll talk to my parents and friends".

Goerges cruised through the Classic rounds, downing Olympic gold-medallist Monica Puig before dispatching Viktoria Kuzmova and Polona Hercog.

Kenin, a 19-year-old wild card, knocked out compatriot Varvara Lepchenko 6-4 7-6 (6) earlier in the day and there were also victories for Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei and Barbora Strycova.

The Regensburg-based world No.14 said the delays were a genuine test of her mental resolve, particularly at the start of a WTA campaign.

"I'm exhausted", the 27-year-old Wozniacki said after spending a total of almost five hours on court.

King Salman on Saturday announced a boost in stipends and tax relief for Saudi citizens, particularly those employed in the military or public sector.

Goerges lost in the 2016 final to Sloane Stephens, lost in semi-finals to Greta Arn and Ana Konjuh and a quarter-final to Wozniacki in 2015.

"It's fine for me - I've played a lot of doubles in the past as well so I've had to double up a lot on days".

The Dane recovered to win the opening set but needed almost 11 minutes to win her second service game en route to beating the American qualifier.

From that point, she held serve through to a 6-4 first-set win, and didn't let a Wozniacki surge prevent her from grinding out a second-set tiebreak triumph. She was confident in her serve, sending down 11 aces, and she pressed Wozniacki back with powerful ground strokes, hitting 22 forehand winners to four. "She's one of the best returners in the world but I tried to make it tough", Goerges said. "It was the workout that I hoped for and now I can take a day off tomorrow and fly to Melbourne, get used to the courts over there and the conditions and hopefully it's going to be a good couple of weeks".

Wozniacki - gunning for both her first Classic title and a first grand slam crown at this month's Australian Open - said the schedule left her exhausted.
