Interior Technology Brings 2019 Ram 1500 Up to Speed
Ram brand manager Michael Manley revealed a few important additional details about the new 2019 Ram pickup when he unveiled the truck at the Detroit auto show Monday morning. Trucks with the available air suspension lower themselves 0.6 inches at speeds above 35 miles per hour for increased aero efficiency; non-air-ride trucks receive an active front air dam that extends at speed, working with active grille shutters to improve aerodynamic efficiency.
Either engine can be paired with Ram's eTorque mild hybrid system that uses energy that would have been lost to braking to provide a little extra boost when needed. It will have stop/start capability, and no alternator.
Both engines are mated to an upgraded eight-speed automatic transmission, which has been programmed with more than 40 shift maps. The EcoDiesel engine will return a short time after launch. Maximum payload is 2300 lbs, with a max tow rating of 12,750 lbs. Ram has opted to comprise the Ram's new frame of 98 percent high-strength steel, more in line with the strategy deployed by GM with their 2019 trucks. The front stabilizer bar is relocated behind the front tires, further improving roll stiffness by 20%. The independent rear suspension returns with five-link coils, with all this adding up to what Fiat Chrysler calls "next level" ride quality. Ram 1500 owners will receive a one-year subscription to SiriusXM All Access with the purchase of equipped 2019 model vehicles. The 2019 RAM 1500 is four inches longer than the outgoing pickup, and half-an-inch wider, yet it's around 225 pounds lighter when comparing equivalent models.
While all of this is good news for North American buyers where pickups continue to sell in record numbers, the outlook for Australia is less clear, with no confirmation of factory right-hand drive, although Ram's parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is believed to be looking closely at opportunities to introduce the new-generation 1500, though in the near term supply may once again fall to right-hand drive conversion specialists. Ram claims that it has more storage capacity than all of its competitors.
In addition to the gas-powered models, the Ram 1500 will bring back its 3.0-liter turbodiesel sometime next year. Its now-gone crosshair grille was a likely victim to the Ram's new worldview-but it was already deleted from Ram 1500 Limited and Ram 1500 Rebel versions when they went on sale previous year.

The reclining rear seats are also major news for the 2019 - or "slide to recline", as the feature was described by Manley.
Ram is also adding goodies such as a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane-keeping system and more to the Ram option list. Along with cylinder deactivation, the 2019 Ram employs as many fuel-saving tactics as possible but can still churn out 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque using the Pentastar or 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque with the Hemi (though the V8 can be had without the mild hybrid system).
