CLEVELAND- The Centers for Disease Control and the Public Health Agency of Canada are investigating an outbreak of E. coli.
In addition to NY, the affected states are California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Vermont and Washington state.
Morrison said it is hard to know why no one on P.E.I. got sick from eating romaine lettuce when people in other provinces did. But at least one large USA organization has taken a preemptive step: Yesterday, Consumer Reports advised Americans to stop eating romaine lettuce until the cause of the outbreak is identified and products are removed from store shelves.
The CDC said it's unable to recommend whether Americans should stop eating romaine lettuce, but Consumer Reports issued a warning Wednesday. In Canada, one person has also died as a result of the infection.
The consumer advocacy group called on the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to do more to warn people about the unsafe outbreak. Fruits and vegetables can become contaminated with E. coli when they come into contact with feces from infected animals, or with bacteria from raw meat, poultry or seafood.

Canadian health authorities have targeted romaine lettuce as the source of the outbreak in Canada and are urging people to avoid the salad greens.
Keep in mind that the United States is still investigating and can't say with 100 percent certainty that romaine lettuce is the cause of the infection here.
"If they want to consume romaine lettuce, paying particular attention to the really thorough washing would be important", she said. Those sickened reported symptoms from November 15 through December 8. Here government health officials are still investigating the outbreaks and have made no suggestions regarding romaine lettuce consumption.
Thorough cooking usually kills foodborne bacteria such as E. coli or salmonella, but lettuce is not usually cooked.
According to consumerreports.org, the strain may cause kidney failure and even death.
