Marine awarded for saving local Okinawans from riptide

A faulty rotor may have caused a United States military helicopter to make an emergency landing on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa, a Japanese official said on Sunday.

Japanese media say a Marine Corps AH-1 attack helicopter with two people aboard landed Monday in a field at a waste disposal site in the town of Yomitan on Okinawa's main island.

Later in the morning the disabled chopper was taken back to its base for further inspections, local officials said.

Footage aired by public broadcaster NHK showed the UH-1 helicopter, which appeared intact, surrounded by United States servicemen and Japanese police on the sandy beach.

Angela Merkel begins new negotiations for fourth term
The potential partners have agreed on a news blackout during the exploratory talks, which are due to finish on Thursday. But it has tended to be viewed as a last resort by both politicians and voters as it leaves the opposition weak.

The U.S. military's UH-1 heavy-lift transport helicopter made the emergency landing just 100 meters away from a residential house, renewing concerns and anger among locals in Okinawa about the safety of U.S. military hardware following numerous incidents of mishaps and accidents recently. No one was injured.

It was the latest in a series of accidents involving United States military equipment that have fuelled local opposition to the basing of American forces on the island. "The Marine Corps will rigorously investigate the cause of the incident", a Marine Corps officer told Kyodo News.

Lt. Gen. Lawrence Nicholson, the top commander of USA military forces in Okinawa, offered an apology for the recent incidents to Okinawa Deputy Gov. Moritake Tomikawa on the phone, according to an Okinawa prefectural official.

Also on Ikei Island, an AH-1 attack helicopter based at Futenma made an emergency landing on a farm path previous year, while a window of a US chopper fell on school grounds in the city of Ginowan hosting the Futenma base last month. The school in Ginowan city is right next to Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.
