On-goers said it meant a lot that the new senator made her first stop in Duluth. And finally, Smith is believed to be the only former Planned Parenthood official in history to be appointed senator, reports Teen Vogue.

Smith, formerly the state's lieutenant governor, was tapped by Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton (D.) to take the seat vacated by former Sen.

Although holding the seat gives Smith some needed name recognition ahead of the election, it also keeps her tied to Washington while her challengers can spend that time campaigning in Minnesota.

Smith said the rise of steel imports - up 18 percent past year through November - puts a strain on families, communities and businesses in northeastern Minnesota.

Franken announced his plan to resign last month after a swirl of sexual misconduct allegations. "I couldn't be happier or more proud of our state that we get the wonderful representation from Tina".

In her first week, Smith dealt with rudimentary paperwork for the Senate and finding a place to live in Washington - a process she called "apartment speed dating". "In every position Tina has held, she has brought her strategic leadership, her finely honed negotiating skills, her business acumen and her passion for women's health and rights-and we are all better for it". She said she came out to see Smith because she's a female, Democratic U.S. senator, and she believes they share the same values.

Billionaire Tom Steyer to deliver copies of 'Fire and Fury' to lawmakers
In the interview, Steyer did not set out conditions for Democrats in these races, or suggest that he would intervene in primaries. Steyer would not, in other words, intervene in races only if the Democrats promised to pursue the impeachment of the president.

Netanyahu Makes Careful Comments on US Aid Cuts to Palestine
The US is the largest donor to UNRWA, with a pledge of almost $370 million as of 2016, according to the organisation's website. While Netanyahu supports the aid cut, he believes the move should be gradual.

Her staff said Saturday that the senator spoke with Nolan this week prior to visiting Eveleth and Duluth.

"I think given what has happened in this country, we need to make sure that women are represented and have a voice", St. Germaine said.

For Smith's part, she responded to news of her senate invitation by stating, "I accept this appointment, and it will be my great honor to serve Minnesota as United States senator".

And the next thing she plans on focusing on when she heads back to Washington next week?

"The Range can't afford to coast while the federal government figures this out", she said, blaming delays by the administration, which telegraphed its desire for tariffs, on the rising imports. She's also set to present a flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol to Hibbing Fire Chief Erik Jankila, in honor of retired Hibbing Fire Capt. Steven Gillitzer, who died in a December 26 fire along with his wife and two of his grandsons; Gillitzer rescued another grandson and died while attempting to save the others.
