People throughout the United States were excited to see the total eclipse of the sun in 2017.

We had the month's first full moon around New Year's Day.

Though a supermoon does appear slightly larger in the sky than a full moon that takes place when Earth's lunar companion is farther away from us in its orbit, the difference is almost impossible for most skywatchers to notice because the moon is so bright and the maximum possible difference in the moon's apparent size is small (only about 14 percent), according to NASA.

Early that morning, about 3:45 a.m., a total eclipse of the moon will occur.

(As if we can call full moons ordinary!) This phenomenon happens when a full moon occurs at its "pedigree" which is its closest orbit to the Earth.

The supermoon is happening on January 30.

On January 31, around midnight, the full moon will not only be super, it will be a blue moon and a blood moon.

The first full moon of the month happened January 2.

You can take a look at NASA's lunar eclipse chart by clicking here, which will show you where you'll be able to find the best view (or whether you'll miss it completely). The only light seen is refracted through the earth's shadow. For Australia, the point of greatest eclipse occurs at around 23:30 AEDT. The type and length of an eclipse depend upon the moon's location relative to its orbital nodes. Moonset will follow at 7:10 a.m. With all this Moon energy this month, you will have the "stars aligned" to understanding yourself better by knowing your Moon sign.

That's three big Moon moments on one glorious night for skywatchers.

NASA promised a trilogy of lunar events beginning back on December 3 and ending with a lunar eclipse on January 31. The umbra will touch the moon at 8:48 p.m., and the maximum eclipse will be at 10:29 p.m. At 1:08 a.m., the eclipse will end for viewers in Tokyo. "Heading farther west into western Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, the eclipse will already be underway as the moon rises". Moonrise there is at 5:01 p.m. local time on January 31, and the moon will reach the edge of the umbra at 5:07 p.m.

And with Earth in between the Sun and the Moon, sunlight has to pass through the Earth's atmosphere, which scatters the green to violet light more than it scatters the red light.
