The DHS says more than 250,000 Salvadorans - all of whom are required to have lived in the U.S. continually since 2001 - are covered by TPS.
The Trump administration has faced a series of deadlines over the past year to decide whether to end the protections for immigrants in the United States whose home countries have been affected by disasters.
Monday's pending announcement is in line with the Trump administration's wider goal of reducing legal immigration to the United States and increasing deportations, said Kevin Appleby of the New York-based Center for Migration Studies.
Salvadorans, whose country was struck by a pair of major earthquakes, will have until September 2019 to leave or obtain other legal options to stay in the United States, according to the Washington Post.
The Trump administration will end protections for certain nationals of El Salvador, a source familiar with the decision tells CNN, a move that could leave more than 200,000 immigrants who have lived in the United States more than 15 years without any legal status.
The department is expected to announce the move Monday morning.

Brown celebrates historic Golden Globe win
If I come from a place of truth all the time, then I can't worry about trying to be Jackie Robinson or anybody else. He's also the first Black actor in 20 years to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a drama series.
Oscar Chacón, executive director of Alianza Americas, a network of Latin American and Caribbean immigrant groups in the USA, said the decision puts the Salvadorans in danger. South Sudanese immigrants' protected status was extended until May 2019.
Immigrant-rights advocates had heatedly fought to keep the Salvadorans here, arguing many of them have put down roots, including having some 200,000 children who, by dint of being born on USA soil, are already citizens.
In November, DHS ended TPS for 60,000 Haitians who arrived after a 2010 natural disaster.
Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen recently met with El Salvador's foreign minister and ambassador, and spoke by phone with the country's president to discuss the issue.
"This is a deeply disappointing decision that will not only disrupt the lives of TPS recipients and their families, but devastate the local economies they have contributed to for years", Noorani said. Other countries covered are Nepal, Somalia, Syria and Yemen.
