Thermometer Breaks After Temperature Plunges to -79 Degrees in Siberia

Although one part of Antarctica has gotten as low as minus 133 degrees F, Oymyakon is the coldest place with permanent residents, and for them, life goes on even in the extreme cold, according to Wired.

But when temperatures dropped to minus 62C this week it proved too much for the new electronic thermometer to handle as it began malfunctioning in the cold temperatures, the Siberian Times reported.

None of this stopped a group of resilient Chinese visiting Oymyakon from peeling down to their underwear in the blistering conditions and taking a splash in a mysterious pool fed by a spring that never freezes in the village.

"This does not freeze even in severe frosts in Oymyakon", wrote journalist Elena Pototskaya, reported the Times.

The East Coast of the U.S. has been inundated with cold weather for the last few weeks.

Imagine temperatures so cold that the thermometer broke.

The nearest city to Oymyakon is Yakutsk, which is 576 miles away and takes two days by auto because planes can't land in winter.

Resident Vladimir Danilov made the film while going to buy whitefish to make local dish stroganina. But photographer Petr Chugunov persuaded a ballerina to perform outside in minus 41°C.

"Some residents recorded temperatures as low as -67C [-88.6F] at their properties, in touching distance of -67.7C [-89.8F], the coldest-ever officially recorded for a permanently inhabited settlement anywhere in the world, and the frostiest in the Northern hemisphere", the Times noted. The coldest all-time temperature was below -90, recorded in the Antarctic by NASA using satellite data.
