These partnerships range from Volkswagen AG and Hyundai Motor Co. teaming up last week with self-driving start-up Aurora in an attempt to join the autonomous race to Ford's partnership with Dominos to test driverless pizza delivery in Ann Arbor.

A video presentation showed customizable options for the e-Palette, from mobile hotel, to ride-sharing vehicle, to restaurant, retail store and more. The company is already partnering with Amazon, Pizza Hut, Uber, Mazda, and ride-sharing giant Didi on the concept.

In terms of design, in addition to the modular interior, the e-Palette features different length and sizes depending on its needs (so large ones for multi-passenger vehicles, and small for pizza delivery for instance).

"This announcement marks a major step forward in our evolution towards sustainable mobility, demonstrating our continued expansion beyond traditional cars and trucks to the creation of new values including services for customers", said Toyota President Akio Toyoda in a statement.

Toyota has created an alliance of business partners called the e-Palette alliance to support e-commerce mobilities. This covers a variety of services useful to mobility-focused companies, including vehicle leasing and insurance, fleet management and big data.

The boxy e-Palette concept is self-driving and fully electric.

Toyota will conduct a feasibility study using its e-Palette concept in various locations from the early 2020s. Business will essentially be able to program the cars as they wish, thanks to software tools and an open control interface that's protected from outside interference by Toyota's Guardian technology.

Toyota hopes the e-Palette concept (or technologies very much like it) can be put into use during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Our 1,800 North American dealerships (nearly 1,500 in the U.S.) sold almost 2.7 million cars and trucks (2.45 million in the U.S.) in 2016 - and about 85 percent of all Toyota vehicles sold over the past 15 years are still on the road today.
