The senator from Arizona said Trump's remarks came in reaction to an element of the deal that would reallocate the visas given out in a lottery to immigrants who are now in a protected status, like Haitians and the Dreamers.

Trump on Friday denied using the vulgarity, but world leaders and members of his own party, along with Democrats, denounced his terminology.

Sen. Dick Durbin, the lone Democrat in the meeting, confirmed the comments Friday morning, calling the words "hate filled, vile and racist".

The president reportedly demanded to know why the U.S. should accept immigrants from "s***hole countries" rather than - for instance - wealthy and overwhelmingly white Norway.

"I'm going to make sure we work to remember what he said in the midterm election ... and clearly we will not have short memories in 2020", she said. "And I'm telling you it's a gross misrepresentation", Mr Perdue said on ABC's This Week.
