South Korean and North Korean leaders will meet again for the first time since late 2015

The talks between North Korea and South Korea are expected to cover the Winter Olympics, to be held in South Korea next month, and inter-Korean relations.

Japan's Kyodo News service and broadcaster NHK said Chang was en route to Switzerland to meet with International Olympic Committee officials, according to the AP.

Earlier this week Trump dismissed Kim's taunt that the North Korean leader has a nuclear button on his desk, saying he has a bigger button. "I think it's premature", said Tillerson.

Trump's remarks were a further pivot from his often-bellicose rhetoric on North Korea and Kim, with whom he has engaged in a war of words that raised fears of nuclear war as Pyongyang carried out missile and nuclear tests.

The annual war games, which tended to kick off in mid-March and last by the end of April, could coincide with the 2018 Winter Olympics scheduled to run from February 9 to February 25 and the Winter Paralympic Games from March 9 to March 18.

The reports on Olympic participation also come after South Korea and the USA announced they would postpone joint military exercises that rile North Korea.

North and South Korea will hold official talks Jan 9.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un offered to send a delegation to the Olympics in Pyeongchang in a New Year's speech.

The meeting will take place in Panmunjom, the truce village in the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone that divides the Korean peninsula.

Trump, who has jumped between taking a provocative approach towards North Korea and calling for a peaceful resolution, on Saturday took credit for paving the way for the talks. "If I weren't involved they wouldn't be talking at all right now", he said.

His administration on Thursday agreed to delay joint military exercises with South Korea until after the Olympics.

The regular joint drills have been criticized by some as adding to regional tensions.

South Korean opposition parties have struck a cautious tone over the latest developments, warning against making concessions to the North to secure its Olympic participation.

Nauert said the North's willingness to talk was an indicator of the success of the US -led "maximum pressure" campaign, which has increased economic sanctions and further isolated the North to get it to abandon its nukes.
