Trump Signs Order Disbanding Voter Fraud Commission

Trump Quietly Dismisses Controversial Voter Fraud Commission

The work to prove that voter fraud is taking place at polls across the county is now in the hands of the Department of Homeland Security.

"It is clear from the White House's statement this evening that American voters still need to be protected from this administration's hostility to voting rights and secure elections", Karen Hobert Flynn, president of Common Cause, said in a statement reacting.

Eight months after President Donald Trump assembled a Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity to expose the largely non-existent phenomenon of "voter fraud" in American elections, the president abruptly disbanded the effort on Wednesday.

Trumps commission was based on his false claims of widespread voter fraud.

The White House, Dunlap and Kobach all said the commission's legal troubles - including a lawsuit from Dunlap himself, which he referenced - had spelled trouble for the body.

Kobach, a conservative Republican and vocal supporter of tough voter ID laws, alleged Democrats wanted no investigation.

"They're talking about how do we have world class public schools, how do we fund our highways, how do we bring stability to state government, and I think that's what people really care about and what this has shown is a preview of what a Kobach administration would be like". But Kobach shouldn't hold his breath waiting for action from DHS.

The prospect of DHS leading a new probe into voter fraud is raising alarm bells among voting rights groups, who warn it could lead to people being wrongly accused of fraud and purged from the voter rolls.

I introduced a bill to disband the commission. "To the extent that they are now hoping to conduct their activities shrouded in secrecy, that's deeply troubling", says Clarke.

While there have been isolated cases of people voting illegally, and many voter rolls contain outdated data, there is no evidence voter fraud is a widespread problem in the United States or has impacted election results.

The commission was a contrived creation from the start, and the decision to kill it is another blow to Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach's ongoing efforts to suppress voting in America.

During the commission's first meeting, Trump had questioned the motives of states that refused to comply with the commission's request, suggesting they had something to hide. "No taxpayer dollars should have been wasted on Mr. Trump's voter suppression crusade".

"President Trump has tried and failed to spread his own fake news about voter fraud", Ho said. "You're not going to play politics with Louisiana's voter data, and if you are, then you can purchase the limited public information available by law, to any candidate running for office", he told the commission.
