Ankara and Berlin should view each other "as equal partners" and demonstrate more mutual understanding instead of engaging in "megaphone diplomacy", Cavusoglu wrote in an op-ed for German publishing group Funke Mediengruppe. For Berlin, Turkey's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation membership and role in stemming migration make it an essential regional partner. "We expect our German friends to better understand the situation that Turkey is now confronted with".
Tensions had already been rising before the coup.
Tens of thousands of people have been detained and purged in Turkey since the July 15, 2016 coup attempt, prompting condemnation by some European Union member states as well as rights groups which accuse the Turkish authorities of using the putsch bid as a pretext to silence opposition.
"They can testify that Ankara is not anti-semetic", said Cavusoglu.
Gabriel said he had discussed the arrest of Deniz Yucel, a prominent German-Turkish journalist who has been jailed in Turkey pending trial on charges of spreading propaganda for the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party. "Likewise, Germany is an important country for Turkey, given that there are millions of people living in Germany who are of Turkish descent".

But there are signs that he could be freed soon following the release last month of another German journalist, Mesale Tolu, and of German human rights activist Peter Frank Steudtner in October.
Turkey's relations with its European partners have been frosty for some time, and with Germany in particular.
Mr Gabriel said he had discussed hard issues including Yucel's case with Mr Cavusoglu, but did not give details. "The German government should seek dialogue with Erdogan".
