Cabinet reshuffle

Northern Ireland Secretary James Brokenshire has quit the cabinet ahead of a reshuffle. The politician said he is expected to undergo surgery to remove a lung lesion.

Mr Brokenshire played a vital role in resolving the crisis last month that threatened to destroy hopes of a deal on the terms of the UK's withdrawal from the European Union. The minister has been in charge of settling a political crisis that has been raging in the semi-autonomous province of the United Kingdom for nearly a year.

However, she will now have to appoint a successor for Mr Brokenshire.

The failure of the talks is pushing Northern Ireland closer towards direct rule from London. She paid tribute to his "diligence, determination and good humour", and said she looked forward to working with him again when he is better.

The Northern Ireland Office confirmed his resignation, but gave no further details.
