When will Snow Bomb Cyclone end stop?

USA forecasters called the ongoing winter storm a "bomb cyclone" for its rapid and rare drop in atmospheric pressure.

Through Thursday, parts of NY could see five to nine inches of snow, Philadelphia three to six inches and Washington one to two inches.

On Thursday, heavy snowfall, glacial temperatures and high winds sparked by a "bomb cyclone" storm had combined to force the cancellation of some 4,300 flights, while another 3,500 were delayed.

Bone-chilling cold, intense snow would usher in another round of minus zero temperatures to New York City and Philadelphia would dip up to minus 22 degrees Celsius. Boston weather was anticipated to be particularly severe, with up to 18 inches of snow predicted, according to the National Weather Service.

It's a version of a real weather term that applies to a massive winter storm that pulled together Wednesday off the U.S. Southeast coast.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced closure of schools due to the impending snowstorm while U.S. Senate would also not vote because of the winter storm.

Blizzard warnings were in place along the coast from North Carolina to ME, with the National Weather Service forecasting winds as high as 55 miles per hour (89 kph) that may bring down tree limbs and knock out power. It's aiming for the Northeast, where the snow forecast for Thursday isn't that big a deal, Furtado and others said.

"We use the term bomb", Furtado said.

More than 10,000 people lost electricity across MA on Thursday, although nearly all of them had their power restored by Friday, according the National Grid website.

At Newark Liberty airport in New Jersey, airlines had cancelled 867 flights as of noon Thursday, 73 percent of normal flight activity.

Governors of states in the path of the storm have declared emergencies.

According to Chicago Department of Aviation, by 9:30 a.m. local time, Chicago O'Hare International Airport had cancelled more than 180 flights and the Midway Airport, more than 50 flights. The worst of this storm will stay out to sea.

The lifeblood of a bombing storm is a harsh gradient between cold and warm temperatures.

The snow storm brought a break in extreme cold temperatures that have gripped much of the region since Christmas, frozen part of the Niagara Falls, played havoc with public works and impeded firefighting in places where temperatures barely broke 20 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 6 centigrade). In this case, it means extra cold Arctic air because of where the polar vortex is, Furtado said. When it happens the results can be ferocious. "The wind is going to be high all through the day".

The high winds generated by the storm could cause widespread power outages to go along with blizzard conditions.

"The actual impacts aren't going to be a bomb at all", Maue said.

It warned that winds could gust as fast as 40 miles per hour (60 kilometers), adding to the chill factor.
