Huawei MateBook X Pro Hands-On: More Than a MacBook Pro Clone
Not only does it give you more screen real estate, you can make better use of it with the M-Pen stylus.
The Chinese telecom company unveiled the MateBook X Pro Feb. 25. Partly that's down to upgrades such as a touchscreen and the latest Intel processor, but also with a lower price that's created to undercut the MacBook. And Huawei also integrated the Dolby Atmos experience technology in the latest MateBook X Pro.
If all goes to plan, you should be able to get your hands on one in the United Kingdom and Western Europe in March. It's telling that Huawei's previous MediaPad tablet dates back from September 2016. We don't yet have pricing for either model, but Peter Gauden - Global Senior Product Marketing Manager for Huawei - has told us it will be "disruptive". Huawei has noticed how many PC users prefer to cover up the camera when they don't need it, to combat hacking or surreptitious recording against their wishes.
The Huawei MediaPad M5 8.5 with 32GB storage (WiFi) is priced at EUR 349, 64GB for EUR 399 and 128GB for EUR 449, while the LTE variants for the same comes with a price tag of EUR 399, EUR 449 and EUR 499 respectively.
The spec is not to be sniffed at either, as the X Pro includes a standalone Nvidia graphics card, Intel core i7 processor and up to 16GB of RAM. First is that there's now a 13.9in screen rather than 13in. It features a 13.9-inch display with 91% body -to-screen ratio with 3:2 aspect ratio.
The FullView display isn't exactly something new to the laptop space. The other two tablets measure 258.7 x 171.8 x 7.3mm, and weigh 498 grams. At full brightness it outputs 450cm/m² and has a contrast ratio of 1500:1. Again, cues have been taken from the MacBook here. Charging is done via USB-C and QuickCharge. On the other side there's a single USB-A port. If you go for the smaller version you'll get a far higher pixels-per-inch result as it comes in it 359ppi compared to 280ppi on the bigger device.

At launch, the Matebook X Pro will be available in two different configurations.
As for storage, there'll be 256 GB to 512 GB of NVMe PCIe SSD on offer.
The laptop is backed by a 57.4Wh battery, which the company claims can deliver 12 hours of video playback and 15 hours of web browsing. The company is going to sell the machine with a new compact 65W USB-C charger, which is about the same size as smartphone fast chargers, describing it as "intelligent enough to charge anything safely".
