India Set to Launch High Power S-band Communication Satellite for Armed Forces

The countdown for the launch of ISRO's GSAT-6A satellite has already started, launch on March 29. These are useful in satellite-based mobile communication applications.

"The state-owned Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch GSAT-6A into space via its Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle from the southern spaceport of Sriharikota, " he said.

It will complement the GSAT-6, which has been orbiting since August 2015 at a longitude of 83 degrees East; its planned mission life is about 10 years.

A key feature of the satellite is to provide mobile communication to India through multi beam coverage facility.

The induction of the Vikas engine and the electromechanical actuation system will enhance the performance as well as the reliability of the launch vehicle respectively.

The GSAT-6A satellite will be put into orbit around 17 minutes after the rocket's lift off. The spacecraft that will weigh about 3,290kg includes an orbiter, a rover and a lander to the moon.

Part of the Antrix-Devas agreement, the GSAT-6A and GSAT- 6 ran into controversy after the government scrapped the deal with Bengaluru-based Devas Multimedia Private Ltd.

In the Union budget for 2018-19, the Department of Space has been tasked with three earth observation space crafts ready for launch; four Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) flights; one each of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle MkII and Mk III.

ISRO chairman K Sivan also told IANS that the communication satellite's Thursday launch will pave the way for another navigation satellite. Addressing mediapersons in Tirupathi, he said that the tie up with the private players is to encourage youngsters, boost business and providing employment opportunities.
