Man Contracts Worst Known Case Of Gonorrhea In The World
Super gonorrhoea is one of many antibiotic-resistant infections which together kill an estimated 700,000 people worldwide each year.
Last year, the World Health Organisation warned that antibiotic-resistant gonorrhoea was on the rise.
The unnamed man discovered he had the STI after getting tested, a month after he returned from Asia earlier this year.
Public Health England said it is the first known example of a gonorrhoea infection that can not be cured with first choice antibiotics. "Here in the United States and around the globe, we have to take drug-resistant gonorrhea seriously in order to invest in finding new cures and preventing infections".
"PHE actively monitors, and acts on, the spread of antibiotic resistance in gonorrhoea and potential treatment failures, and has introduced enhanced surveillance to identify and manage resistant strains of infection promptly to help reduce further spread".
The STI is typically contracted by having vaginal, anal or oral sex with someone who has already been infected. According to Public Health England, the man has developed a case of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which isn't responding to any treatment.
Doctors in England have previously expressed fears that it's only a matter of time before the main drugs used to treat the superbug fail and the threat of treatment-resistant super-gonorrhoea in Ireland has been flagged before.

Dr. Olwen Williams of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV said the "highly resistant gonorrhea strain" comes at a very concerning time due to bureaucratic budget cuts.
"First line treatment for gonorrhoea is a combination of 2 antibiotics (azithromycin and ceftriaxone)".
Symptoms usually develop within two weeks of a person becoming infected, but around one in 10 men and half of women who are infected will not experience any obvious signs of the infection. Only chlamydia and genital warts are more prevalent.
Symptoms are not always easily identifiable with gonorrhoea but can include a thick green or yellow discharge from sexual organs, and pain when urinating.
Dr Gwenda Hughes, from Public Health England, said: "This is the first time a case has displayed such high-level resistance to both of these drugs (azithromycin and ceftriaxone) and to most other commonly used antibiotics". There are more than 35,000 people with the illness in Britain and more than 78 million people per year get it worldwide. The bacteria can cause lead to serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility.
