TV helicopter footage shows students being led out of the school and onto buses
An Indiana middle schooler has been taken into custody after allegedly opening fire on schoolmates Friday, officials said.
Chris Navarro, 13, said he was in an auditorium at Noblesville West Middle School when he heard the shots about a minute before the bell rang for the change in classes. The school is reportedly on lockdown with police and SWAT on the scene sweeping the building.
An eighth-grader said he counted 16 gunshots inside the middle school during the shooting.
Scores of parents have arrived at a suburban Indianapolis high school to pick up their children after a shooting at a nearby middle school in which a child and an adult were injured.
Among the anxious parents who rushed to get their kids was Erica Higgins, who told WTHR-TV that she learned of the shooting from a relative who called her at home.
She said she is shocked this happened at her child's school. The girl was taken to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in Indianapolis. She didn't know the seriousness of their injuries.
Vice President Mike Pence, who was governor of IN before becoming vice president, offered his thoughts and prayers to Noblesville West Middle School. But hospital officials said at least three people, including one adult, were being treated. No further details were provided about the suspect, victim or possible motive for the attack.

Police said they did not believe there were suspects at the time, although they did confirm that threats had been made to other middle schools in the area.
The shooting comes a week after 10 people were killed at a school in Santa Fe, Texas.
Police first learned of a reported active shooter situation at the school was issued at 9:06 a.m. Friday. The victims were transported to the hospital and their families have been notified. He says no other information is available about the victims.
"We believe he is the involved suspect", he said.
"We have multiple officers and a command post established at Noblesville High School and are diligently ensuring the safety of students and staff there". Sweeney got a text Friday morning saying there was a school shooter and they were on their way to a safe location.
Noblesville is north of Indianapolis.
