Many feared drowned as boat capsizes in river Godavari in Andhra Pradesh

A boat carrying around 40 people on Tuesday capsized in Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh. The tragedy took place between 4.30 PM to 5 PM near Manturu of Devipatnam Mandal in East Godavari district. Ace swimmers to trace the missing persons had been pressed into service, he said.

"This evening, a boat ferrying people capsized in Godavari River near Devipatnam here. But we are told that 23 people are still missing", a local government official told Xinhua. "Some of us requested that the boat be stopped at Mulapadu, a stop before Mantur, when we noticed that the weather was rough, but the driver chose to go ahead", a survivor said.

Following the accident, local authorities sent police and rescue teams to the spot to carry out rescue work. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister (Home) N Chinarajappa has inquired about the incident and instructed the concerned officials for search operations.
