Roseanne’ Won’t Focus Much on Politics Year Says ABC President
"There, now you're all caught up".
On the other hand, some have criticized the show for its representation of star and creator Roseanne Barr's political beliefs, most notably in a recent episode that dealt with Islamaphobia.
When the show returned this spring after a 21-year absence, the titular matriarch played by Roseanne Barr was re-introduced as a supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump, while her sister Jackie, played by Laurie Metcalf, was still upset that Hillary Clinton or Jill Stein didn't win the election. In subsequent episodes, it delved much more on the "everyday trials and tribulations" of the Conner family.
"Roseanne" may not focus on politics going into the second season of the revival, ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said. Many took the joke as a jab at fellow ABC comedies "Black-ish" and "Fresh Off the Boat". Dan asks what time it is and if he missed dinner. Roseanne responds, "They're just like us. It's a familiarity and comfort with the culture of objectifying and demeaning people of color".
Dungey defended the Roseanne writers on that particular incident Tuesday on a conference call with reporters, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

ABC says Roseanne will edge away from politics as it goes into next season.
