Jalalabad attack

Nangarhar provincial governor's spokesman Attaullah Khogyani informed AFP that there were two explosions near the city's directorate of finance.

At least 4 Afghan nationals were killed and 20 others injured on Sunday in deadly suicide blasts ahead of a gun battle between Afghan security forces and militants in Jalalabad area of Afghanistan.

The attack took place on Sunday afternoon when a suicide attacker detonated a bomb near a building, the TOLO broadcaster reported.

However, an eyewitness said four explosions have been heard in the area.

Jalalabad is the capital of restive Nangarhar, which borders Pakistan. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but both the Taliban and a local Islamic State affiliate reject democratic elections and have targeted them in the past.

Militants have staged several attacks across Afghanistan this year.

In January, gunmen attacked an office of aid group Save the Children in Jalalabad, killing at least five people and wounding 25.

April saw a series of attacks across the country targeting voter registration centers as the country gears up for long-delayed legislative elections due in October. Most have been in the capital Kabul.

Kabul has become one of the deadliest places in the country for civilians as security forces struggle to keep the militants at bay following the withdrawal of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation combat forces at the end of 2014.
