Meanwhile, Rangers confirmed an agreement to bring Allan McGregor back to the club today.

McGregor recently rejected a contract extension at Hull City where he won Player of the Year for 2017/2018.

Rangers yesterday announced the signing of Scott Arfield from Burnley as the first import of Steven Gerrard's reign a Ibrox. Before Hull, he spent some time in Turkey playing his club football for Besiktas.

"He is vastly experienced goalkeeper who we feel can add to the options available to us now", Gerrard told the club website.

"He is a Rangers supporter who rose through the ranks here, so having someone with such a depth of feeling towards the club is another great asset to the squad".

The veteran had no hesitation in returning to the club where he started his career and is prepared to fight for the No 1 spot with Wes Foderingham and Jak Alnwick.

McGregor won three successive league titles with Rangers in 2009, 2010 and 2011. "When the chance came, it was an absolute no-brainer", the 36-year-old told Rangers TV.

The 21-year-old centre back impressed on loan at Bolton this year where his performances helped keep Wanderers in the Championship.

"We need to make this place a fortress where nobody wants to come", he said.
