American Airlines announces new emotional-support animal restrictions

The airline announced changes to its policy on Monday following recent controversies over attempts to bring peacocks and other non-traditional support animals on board its flights.

Passengers also must contact the American Airlines special assistance desk at least 48 hours before their flight to fly with an emotional support or psychiatric service animal in the cabin.

American Airlines will ban a number of animals, including hedgehogs, sugar gliders and goats, from its flights, beginning July 1.

While federal regulation requires airlines to permit service animals to accompany passengers with disabilities in their seat, there has been a growing number of concern about the type of animals passengers have been bringing on board - including comfort turkeys and gliding possums.

Passengers with a support animal have always had to provide a letter from their mental health professional.
