"It is a part of history and no one can change it", said Khan, the former pro-vice chancellor of Ignou and former president of AMU Students' Union.

According to the university, Jinnah's portrait had been there for decades since he was a founder member of the university court and had been given life membership of the union 80 years ago.

The matter grabbed headlines first after Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Aligarh MP Satish Gautam questioned the portrait's presence in the office.

"He was the founder member of the University Court in 1920 and also a donor", the spokesman said.

"I have told the leaders of the AMU Students Union that they should not make such baseless allegations", he said. MP Savitri Bai Phule making a remark on Jinnah said Muhammad Ali Jinnah was a "mahapurush (great man)" who contributed to India's freedom struggle.
