Though Essential's smartphone is still on sale, without a clear plan to continue their smartphone line, it's pretty dubious how they'll continue their dream of a unified experience centered around the company's ambient OS.

Essential, the maker of the Essential Phone is considering selling itself and has canceled development of a new smartphone, according to people familiar with the matter. The smartphone came with Android Operating System, with a redefined design and branding concept.

Essential has raised $300 million to date and has been valued at around $1 billion. The first Essential phone was initially promoted as a competitor to Apple's iPhone due to its design and what was supposed to be Essential's ability to be used easily by wireless connections with other intended devices. However, his tweet confirms the earlier rumours about the company's approach towards smart home products. The Essential Phone debuted amid high expectations and was lauded for its design and nearly stock Android software.

And if you were hoping to wait for the successor to that device, you're in for more bad news. Bloomberg says the smartphone maker has sold 150,000 units so far. It has lost dozens of hardware and software engineers as well as top executives. Brian Wallace, the original vice president of marketing, left just weeks after the company started.

Discussions are now involving sale of the entire company including its product portfolio, patents, as well as future products to be released by the company. A deal hasn't been made with another company yet, though.

The Essential Phone's one-and-done smartphone fate isn't a big surprise today. An unreleased smart home device, along with another camera attachment for the Essential Phone that isn't the 360-degree accessory, are also included in the sale.
