Apple is facing a class action lawsuit over claims the hardware maker knew that the "butterfly" keyboard on its MacBook range was defective, but rolled out the device anyway.
According to the text of the lawsuit, which was filed in the United States District Court Northern District of California, "Despite awareness of the keyboard defect, Apple equipped future model MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops with the butterfly keyboard, and continued selling these laptops to consumers at premium prices". The keyboard was advertised as being more responsive and comfortable than its previous iteration.
While the majority of MacBooks and MacBook Pros are obviously working fine with the new keyboards, a substantial number of users have reported problems. It's not acceptable for computers that cost $1,299 and more to have keyboards that break because of small amounts of dust. This leads to unregistered keystrokes making the machine useless. However, the fix could take a week or more, which would leave the user without a laptop for that time.
However, Apple seems to be aware of the issue and seems to have acknowledged the problem.
But for some users, the keyboard isn't flawless. This reporter, who wrote the inciting piece about how her MacBook Pro keyboard simply couldn't remain functional regardless of how many times she got it fixed, has since sold her 2016 model back to Apple and continues to use her 2013 MacBook Pro, praying every day that it doesn't die.

Despite awareness of the defect, Apple touted-and continues to tout-the MacBook as having a superior and highly responsive keyboard, with "four times more key stability than a traditional scissor mechanism.' Apple's representations regarding the MacBook's keyboard were false". Apple had to replace not only a unresponsive key, but a substantial part of their MacBook for free while under warranty.

Last month, AppleInsider, in data from Genius Bar locations and authorized third-party shops, found 2016 MacBook Pro's keyboard failed roughly twice as often in its first year of use than 2014 and 2015 MacBook Pro models with scissor-type switches. But of course, they weren't open about it.
After numerous complaints from consumers, Apple finally responded to the defects with an online guide for cleaning the keyboard with compressed air.
Ultimately, the lawsuit seeks damages, legal fees, and alls for Apple to disclose the keyboard flaws and replace defective units, including reimbursement for the initial laptop purchase.
